St Wolfgang Austria

St Wolfgang Austria

Here is a little trip in your life’s journey that will thrill you with joy.  After leaving the wharf at St Gilgen, the ferry winds its way around the hillside, clusters of homes, retreats, hotels etc and after about 20 minutes arrives in St Wolfgang.

St Wolfgang Street

It is just exciting to meander through this pretty village with its true Austrian heritage. Balconies with their beautiful flower boxes, the outside walls of the buildings all so artistically painted. Horse drawn carriages available for a ride. The shops although typically for tourists are just great to browse in and often just can’t resist taking home a little of St Wolfgang.

The very old church beckons you, although “No Photos” signs are up. Just to see the age of this place and to think villagers have been worshipping here for hundreds of years and still do, is thrilling.

To the side of the church is a great place to take photos of the lake as it is elevated. There are arches along the waterfront which frame the photos of the lake. You can go wandering along the water either side of the village and enjoy the flowers and passing parades. You can’t visit our special place “St Wolfgang” without a visit on the rack railway up to the top of Schafberg mountain behind St Wolfgang.

What fun finding your seat on this unusual little train with the cho-cho engine (as I called them when I was little). This historic train brings such gorgeous scenery of the lake and villages below. Plus, the mountains of sheer beauty roll off one onto another. At last you reach the peak and then it’s quite a short sharp final step to the top.

St Wolfgang A Must

You can spend a couple of hours enjoying a snack, soaking in the magnificent hills of the “sound of Music” on Schafberg.

A must is to remember to book your return trip down the mountain when you first arrive at the top. We forgot last time and had a few hours wait for the trip down. Next time our final village around Wolfgangsee is Strobl.

St Gilgen Austria

St Gilgen Austria

St Gilgen Austria

Let me introduce you to our beautiful little treasure tucked away in the Salzkammergut in Austria. Austria certainly has some treasures. How can I express the inner peace, this fantastic beautiful area creates in your being. The sounds of the hills alive with music!!! Where are we? About 25kms from Salzburg airport. St Gilgen is situated on the shores of Wolfgangsee. Over the years we have visited this mind-blowing beautiful area several times over. It just keeps calling us back. Wolfgangsee has 3 magnificent villages around its shores. Certainly, you can travel to the 3 villages by road, BUT, the thrill of the ferry on this shimmering lake will transport you into a picturesque new world. Each of these villages has their own unique features. It is hard to choose our favourite one, having stayed at all 3.

Para Gliding Zwolferhorn

Let me first introduce you to St Gilgen. What a quaint Austrian village with its painted murals on the houses and even more on the hotels. We arrived on one trip, on the opening of the summer season. The place was in full holiday season mode. The streets took on a carnival atmosphere with stalls, specialty Austrian dishes were being prepared. Chickens were being rotisseried, their special cakes were cooked, the town was decked out in their magnificent traditional clothes, women and girls in dirndl and men in their leather 3/4 pants with braces and of course their special hats, this is called lederhosen, and then to compliment the event….the band playing oompa pa with their piano accordions and the singers harmony, all added their special touch.

St Gilgen Splendour

The town was already, the locals, the international visitors just bursting for the summer to begin. There is much to be seen and heard here. Museums, mountains, swimmers in the lake and beautiful flowers. Behind the village a gondola awaits you for a trip up Schwarzhorn. What a view!!! A ride well worth taking. It lifts you up to the glorious panoramic views surrounding St Gilgen. A cup of coffee always ready to buy. You mustn’t miss seeing the magnificent church in all its gold splendour and behind the church the prettiest little cemetery you will ever find. So worth a visit.

We encouraged my brother and his wife to travel with us, and they like us, want to return time and time again. We rented an apartment for the four of us which helped with the cost. One of our favourite pastimes is to walk 5 minutes to the lakes edge and there sit under the avenue of trees watching the passing parade, with the background of mountains reflected in the lake, a view you would die for. Just a little further past the trees a cafe perched on the side of the lake which entices you to eat, sit, relax and watch the skiers and boats. On each visit, a must, is a sail on the lake in the ferry on Wolfgangsee, to the other two villages.

I hope I have whetted your appetite to visit our little treasure in a very special spot in the Salzkammergut in beautiful Austria….next time St Wolfgang.

Strobl Austria

Strobl Austria

Strobl Austria

Our next sneak look at a Salzkammergut Austrian village is at Strobl. As you approach the beachfront of the lake from the ferry, particularly on holidays or long weekends a flotilla of watercraft catches your attention. There are water skiers, para-gliders, canoeists, swimmers and fishermen, plus the likes of us sunbathers or just sun sitters enjoying the picnic atmosphere of the region. Strobl is not as commercialised as St Gilgen or St Wolfgang and we found the local shopping easier. Being able to walk to the supermarket on the local road was good. We stayed 2 weeks here sharing a flat with my brother and sister in-law. This whole area on Wolfgangsee is expensive so sharing worked out well. Our flat was about 5-8 minutes walk to the lakes edge. How relaxing it was to sit and watch the colourful array of boats all twinkling in the water.

Strobl Lake View

We decided on this trip to Austria not to hire a car but to travel by public transport. We pre-booked a taxi to pick us up at Salzburg airport and this worked out quite reasonable, with 4 of us sharing. The bus served us well, we traveled to Bad Ischl (a spa town) and what a delightful town that is. It was interesting looking through the shops and meandering down by the Traun River. We changed buses here and headed towards the gondola to reach the mountain Katarina. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and a panoramic view of Bad Ischl. It was a delight for us to eat in a little alpine hut on the side of the mountain. It was so snug and warm protected from the cold. This was a days outing all by public transport.

Strobl Worth A Look

Another day, after a bus trip to the train, we were on our way to another favourite spot Hallstatt. What a picturesque village nestled on the side of a large mountain range and beautiful lake. The train takes you to a station on the other side of the lake opposite Hallstatt and a ferry sails you in.

Traveling up the rack railway to this panoramic view, where photo shots, tea or coffee, plus strudel are a must. There is a walk to the ice caves from this point.

A return trip along the village to the ferry for a sail to the train on the opposite side of the lake. Then a bus trip back to Strobl with beautiful scenery each step of the way. I hope this preview of this lovely region encourages you to travel to Salzkammergut Austria.
