Sandman Inn Blue River

Sandman Inn Blue River

Heading off from Kamloops we point the car towards Sandman Inn, Blue River on highway 5 for our next night stay. The distance is only about 230 km. However, we have some stops to make along the way. The first stop is Sun Peaks Resort, we take the turn off along Highway 5. Sun Peaks Resort is approximately a 70 km round trip from highway 5.

While this adds more time to our trip it was worth the detour. It looks like it would be lovely to have a skiing holiday here in the winter season.

This little hamlet exudes a feeling of cosiness and charm that would be magic in winter. In front of us still lay several hours of travel so we must depart Sun Peaks bound for Clearwater.

Clearwater lays halfway between Kamloops and Sandman Inn Blue River. However, the reason for our visit is Spahats Falls.Taking a left turn into Clearwater Valley Road from highway 5 we travel 11 km to the carpark at Spahats Falls. The free carpark is large, there are toilets and a food vending truck located here. From the carpark it is a leisurely 5 minute walk along a track to see the falls.

The fall is majestic and can be viewed from several vantage points along the trail. Great spot to capture some beautiful waterfall pictures. Give yourself at least 30 minutes to soak it all in.

On your way out make sure to grab a hot dog and fries, they were really good. Again, we hit the road, our final destination Sandman Inn Blue River. Continuing along highway 5 following the meandering North Thompson River on one side and pine trees on the other. It is such a lovely part of the world that we are experiencing.

Sandman Inn Blue River Arrival

Pulling into Sandman Inn Blue River around 4 in the afternoon we check in and head to our room. We are quite surprised at how lovely it is, looks like the rooms have been recently renovated. The rooms have modern amenities, queen bed, air conditioning, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, alarm clock and tv. Shower has good water pressure and the hot water lasted for both our showers. There is an on-site restaurant, rooms very quiet, free Wi-Fi in room, pillows are ok, bed is not too hard, friendly and helpful staff and free parking. The only cons were there are lots of mosquitoes and no safe in room. However, these are not significant issues.

We had dinner at The Grill, the meals were ok nothing special. The service was very slow but, I believe one of the staff didn’t turn up for work. No big problem as we sat and admired the hummingbirds while we waited for our meals. These birds are amazing how they hover, and their wings move so fast. Trying to catch them with my camera was a bit of a challenge though I did get a couple of half decent shots.

Going outside was an experience as the mosquitoes were on you in a second and there were loads of them. Aeroguard (aussie for bug spray) would have been ideal at this particular moment 😊. The Sandman Inn Blue River had a lovely view across to the mountains which looked beautiful early in the morning. Overall the Sandman Inn Blue River was worth the stay.

De Rose Hotel Review

De Rose Hotel Review

Driving down a small lonely backstreet street in a city you have never visited can give you mixed feelings of dread and anxiety, should we be going down here?  You hear stories of foreigners going into an area and never being heard from again. Could this happen to us today, were the thoughts dancing back and forth across the neurons of my mind. Hypothetically yes it could, but logically no it wouldn’t. Thankfully the latter prevailed as we turned into a lovely boutique Thai hotel in Chiang Mai named De Rose Hotel. Realistically I had let my mind run away with me, the street was no different to the plethora that surrounded us. Pulling the car into the provided parking space we were greeted enthusiastically by the owners of De Rose Hotel. Even though we were just guests they made us feel like long lost relatives.

Having heard about the Thai hospitality, it was shining through in amazing rays of light by these three lovely people that greeted us. The two young men helped us with our large bags up to our rooms. Furthermore, they explained where everything was and how it worked. Noy was a lovely hostess, friendly, attentive and very welcomingly. They offered to take us into the Sunday night markets and suggested we go to the café at the end of the road. After we had settled in, we walked down to the café and had a refreshing cold Italian strawberry soda water and a bowl of fries. Having not yet acclimatised to the heat having spent five months in Europe before arriving in Thailand. We headed back to the De Rose Hotel to cool down in our room before heading to the markets.

De Rose Hotel Location

De Rose Hotel is situated approximately eight kilometres south from the walking markets in the Old City of Chiang Mai. Also, about six kilometres south of Chiang Mai Airport. The area is safe and if you like to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is perfect. It cost us 139 Baht (approximately $6.20 AUD) to catch a Grab (similar to Uber) from the walking markets. Having a car would be an advantage, but definitely, not a requirement as getting into Chiang Mai is easy enough. Also, they have offered as a ride to the airport for 160 Baht ($7.16 AUD) when we stay next week before leaving Chiang Mai. De Rose Hotel contact details are supplied below.

The accommodation was excellent, the room was airconditioned, contained a fridge with cold drinks (decent prices), free cold bottled water and some snacks (decent prices). Furthermore, the room was very clean and the bed was fairly comfortable. Breakfast was included in the price of our room, it comprised of scrambled eggs, toast, two different types of meat not sure what they were but tasted fine. As well as including coffee or tea and bananas. Also, the service was amazing, making sure we had plenty of food and we were happy with everything. Overall, De Rose Hotel turned out to be an amazing place to stay. We can highly recommend it if you are ever in Chiang Mai. To emphasize how impressed we are, we have booked our last night in Chiang Mai here.

Hotel Seattle Review

Hotel Seattle Review

Hotel Seattle Review

Hotel Seattle located at 315 Seneca Street Seattle didn’t have the best reviews but we thought we would give it a chance. It was well priced, centrally located in downtown Seattle and close to transport. Using booking.com we have found to be a terrific way to search and book our hotel accommodation while travelling. Hotel Seattle is within walking distance to shops, the pier and many other tourist locations. The staff are friendly, the room is clean, the pillows, water pressure and hot water all good. There is free Wi-Fi but not in the room unfortunately only in hotel lobby. The chair in the room was incredibly comfortable.

On the downside the whole hotel needed to be renovated. Paint was coming away from the ceiling and walls. The pipes were old and rusty. The hotel would benefit from some noise cancelling features as the traffic could be heard, and was quite loud. Having only one lift to service all floors would cause a problem if the hotel was busy, lucky for us it wasn’t. Also, the bed was extremely soft, with everything falling into the centre. It was also a noisy bed, so when you turned over the whole bed moved and the head board banged against the wall. Very annoying when you turn over as much as I do. Hence, I put a hand towel in between the bed head and wall. Some minor points it didn’t have a safe, microwave, fridge, coffee maker or parking.

Verdict

Although there were a number of issues concerning the Hotel Seattle, overall the positives outweigh the negatives. For the price and location, we would stay here again.

Motel 6 St Louis Airport

Motel 6 St Louis Airport

Motel 6 St Louis Airport

Over our years of traveling, we have stayed in many hotels ranging from cheap to very expensive. We are very easy going and can handle most hotel rooms that maybe a bit questionable. I can’t remember ever leaving a hotel, just after checking in, and not staying, even though we had paid for it in advance. However, there is always a first time, and that came at Motel 6 St Louis Airport. Having just completed a seven hour road trip, we arrived at Motel 6 St Louis Airport that we had booked online. Pulling into the car park we both had a sense of what we were about to encounter. The exterior of the motel is in dire need of renovating to say the least. Like wise the car park was scattered with some dubious looking vehicles. Even so, we still checked in only to have our previous thoughts confirmed.

Walking to our room on the second floor, we decided against the stairs as they looked a bit dodgy. Only to be overwhelmed by the awful smell that was present in the elevator and what looked like a suspect liquid on the floor. Looking back, we should have left then and there. The other rooms looked dodgy from the outside as we walked by, seedy motel rooms, as seen in those tv shows. But no, we opened the door to our room only to be overcome by the strong smell of bleach mixed with cigarette smoke. Finally, looking past the overbearing smell we were confronted with a bed that had a mattress on a wooden board and four legs. A TV on the wall a small desk and 2 bed side tables all of them really old. The floor, sink and bathroom weren’t cleaned properly, and the windows were dirty.

Moving on

We could hardly breathe due to that smell, even having the windows and doors opened did not help. Looking outside, we did not feel safe, and that was the final straw we packed up and left. Having left, we were now in need of a hotel for the night. Thankfully we have a booking.com account and we were able to find a reasonable priced hotel not too far away.

Days Inn Seattle South Tukwila

Days Inn Seattle South Tukwila

Days Inn Seattle South Tukwila

The Days Inn Seattle South Tukwila is situated 8.5 kilometres from SeaTac Airport and 17 kilometres to Downtown Seattle. We found this hotel to be suitable for our requirements, but it was not as close to the airport as we thought. The hotel room was very nice, clean and tidy though the WiFi wasn’t working in the room. Public transport (the bus) into Seattle was about a 15 minute walk not a big deal because we were on holidays. We would stay here again if needed, but probably book a hotel either at the airport or in Seattle. For more information on Days Inn Seattle South Tukwila click here and for a map click on Google Maps.

  • Pros: Nice clean room, free shuttle to/from airport, large bed, soft bed, pillows ok, good water pressure, hot water lasted for both our showers, staff were friendly, had pool, free breakfast (pastries, waffles, toast, juice, tea coffee, fruit), free wifi in rooms (but didn’t work), TV, clock, coffee maker, fridge, seat in room very comfortable. Good value for money.
  • Cons: No safe in room, staff were not helpful with directions or public transport directions, had to figure out how to  to get into Seattle by bus by ourselves, had a busy road next to hotel so had a bit of traffic noise but not enough to be a major concern. No usb connection to charge devices, free wifi wouldn’t work, no pen or pad for writing notes, vending machine didn’t give us our chosen snack and staff couldn’t open it so we lost our money, which is frustrating late at night, when nothing else open to eat, and you are hungry.

Pacific Marina Inn

Pacific Marina Inn

Pacific Marina Inn Oahu Hawaii

The Pacific Marina Inn is situated 2.2 kilometres form the Daniel K. Inouye (Honolulu) International Airport and 12.5 kilometres to the International Market Place Waikiki. We found this hotel to be very convenient as we were using Hawaii as a stop over to break up the flight from Brisbane Australia to Seattle USA. The hotel was clean and tidy, though it is in an industrial area, it suited our needs for the night. It would have been handy to have in room WiFi but for the night it wasn’t a big issue. We would stay at this hotel again if we have a 1 night stay over in Oahu. For more information on Pacific Marina Inn click here and for a map click on Google Maps. Click here to get great hotel deals.

The Good and The Bad

  • Pros: Clean room, reasonably priced, close to airport, free shuttle to/from airport, friendly staff, quiet, bus to Waikiki is a short walk, good water pressure, hot water lasted for both our showers, bed was soft which I like, pillows were ok, air conditioning worked well (a bit noisy), had a pool, had pen and pad for writing notes, TV, clock, coffee maker, fridge, hairdryer. Great for one night stopover in Honolulu.
  • Cons: Hotel is old and could do with a freshen up, had free WiFi but only in reception area, was not the prettiest of areas, no free breakfast, no safe in room, no USB connection to charge devices, not close to anything but the airport.
