House Sitting Gartmore

Temperature is sitting at 0°C as we turn into the main street, and house sitting Gartmore has begun. As we climb the hill, century old houses dot either side of the road. Reaching the crest, the one and only pub stands majestically upon it’s top.

Surrounded by the community centre and the local store, which we would frequent several times while house sitting Gartmore. Descending from the crest we get the first glimpse of our what is to be our abode for the next three weeks. It is a charming cottage, just what you would expect to find in a rural town nestled in the highlands of Scotland. Upon exiting the car, we are greeted by the crisp frigid air that would accompany us for the next three weeks. However, we have become slightly accustomed to the low temperatures from the proceeding months in England.

Stepping through the front door we are enthusiastically greeted by Jackie and very warmly welcomed into their home. House sitting Gartmore was off to a flying started and would continue for the entirety of our stay. The cottage consisted of two floors, the upper floor contained the three bedrooms and bathrooms. While downstairs hosted the family room, country styled kitchen, dining room and cosy study. The house is filled with loads of country character and charm. Picture in your mind a country styled garden with yellow daffodils, cottage flowers and dramatic mountain backdrop and you have the garden that gently flows from the rear of the cottage. Having been in regular contact with Jackie and Paul we already felt like long-time friends. Introducing us to friends in the local community with a welcoming afternoon tea. We already felt like we are honorary Scots 😊.

House Sitting Gartmore with Baffie

House sitting Gartmore is all about Baffie the black cat. Baffie is very independent but has a very loving nature. So, the times she would be around and seek our attention was lovely. Getting her to chase the toy on the stick was cool or have her running through her toy tunnels was amusing. After playtime she would stay for a scratch but not for long. We would also visit her up on Paul and Jackie’s bed where she would spend most of her day sleeping. She loved to have a scratch there and would get up and have a stretch then lay back down and take more scratches. Night-time Baffie was off exploring the country only to return early morning for some food and to assume her position on the bed. Baffie is a pleasure to care for as we take on the role of adopted mum and dad.

House sitting Baffie has enabled us to experience the truly magnificent country that is Scotland. Not knowing what to expect we have been genuinely surprised and awe inspired.

The Scottish Highlands, Lochs and epic scenery will stick in our memories for years to come. If you have never visited Scotland, I would highly recommend putting it on your bucket list as you won’t be disappointed.Having had the pleasure of meeting two wonderful people in Paul and Jackie who we now consider good friends. House sitting Gartmore has been an awesome experience and one that will be remembered fondly. Thanks Jackie, Paul and Baffie.

Movie Road Trip

Movie Road Trip

Movie Road Trip

Quiet on the Set! Awakened from our peaceful night’s slumber, we prepare for our movie road trip in the highlands of Scotland. Showers; check, camera equipment; check, very warm clothes; double check, petrol in the car; check. Breakfast and coffee to be picked up asap, sustenance will be required for our long, movie road trip. Action!!! Gartmore is now just a fleeting speck in the rearview mirror as the road before us winds through fields filled with grazing sheep and their lambs. A grey canopy hovers above us, fingers crossed that some blue sky will materialise in the coming hours. In the distance, peeking above the treed skyline two familiar arches are seen. Albeit not the nutritious breakfast we were after. However, not knowing the area, better the devil you know! Tummies filled, coffee addiction satisfied for a while at least we return to our movie road trip.

As a boy, I remember my parents speaking passionately about places such as Loch Lomond, Ben Lomond and Loch Ness just to name a few. Today we will be fortunate to gaze upon them as my parents had done years before. Just a quick Scottish lesson here, Loch means lake and Ben means high mountain in case you were wondering 😊. Loch and Ben Lomond are the first of many fantastic sights we will see today. Although today is overcast the scenery is beautiful and we get the sense of how spectacular they would be on a lovely sunny day. Heading deeper into the highlands of Scotland we come to an iconic section of road known as the “Rest and be Thankful Road”.  However, and unfortunately for us, there were roadworks happening. While stopped waiting we were able to admire the scenery and see the road we could have taken.

Scene 1 Movie Road Trip

Our first major sight is the classic James Bond scene in Skyfall. M and James can be seen standing by his Aston Martin looking down the valley talking to each other. Although there was no sign to indicate where exactly this scene took place, we finally found it on our way back out. It was quite exciting looking out over the beautiful countryside imitating Daniel Craig.

Google maps say the location of the scene is approximately 3.2 km from the turnoff from the A82 which is 18 km from Glencoe. The unnamed road follows the River Etive with lovely landscape vistas around every bend. For James Bond fans it is worth the visit.

If you continue down the unnamed road approximately 13 km you will arrive at a lovely little stream crossing the road. It has a lovely cascading waterfall great spot to capture some lovely pictures.

Scene 2 Movie Road Trip

Moving on we now set our sights on Glenfinnan Viaduct. Harry Potter fans will know this bridge as it is used in four of the movies in which the Hogwarts Express travels over.

The tourist centre at Glenfinnan Viaduct is located 24 km from the turnoff of the A82 near Inverlochy along the A830. Parking cost £3 which was a lot we thought considering where it is. However, the carpark was full. We were lucky enough to find a small street about 100m from the carpark that we could use and it was free.

From this carpark, it is about 750 m walk to one of the viewing points. The viaduct is an amazing looking structure consisting of 21 arches spanning 380m. Built-in 1898-99 of concrete it carries a single railway track still in use today.

Even though I’m not a Harry Potter fan, its worth a visit.

Final Act of our Movie Road Trip

Having already covered lots of kilometres we are still left with many more before we call it a day. However, we still have loads to see and places to go. First on the list is Loch Ness, having heard and read many stories who knows we may see Nessy. Surprisingly Loch Ness was far longer than we expected, but we are glad we have seen it. As the kilometres tick over, we are privy to incredible snow-capped mountains spectacular vista and calming streams. The highlands of Scotland are impressive and worthy of a visit. Finishing our movie road trip is the Falls of Dochart in Killin. A gorgeous set of falls running through the centre of Killin. Photographers will love these falls as there are many different compositions to be had.

As we leave Killin our movie road trip is coming to an end. Having travelled in excess of 500 km over 12 hours we can honestly say it has been an award-winning trip. Scotland has surprised us, having totally blown us away.

The Pier Cafe

The Pier Cafe

The Pier Café Stronachlachar Scotland

Today we find ourselves weaving our way through the stunning countryside of the Scottish Highlands. Heading towards Stronachlachar pier the starting point to a leisurely cruise on Loch Katrine in The Trossachs National Park. As always, we are running early just as, we like it. After all, you never know what issues you may encounter when you have a departure time that isn’t flexible. Therefore, with time to spare we head into the aptly named “The Pier Café” to get our tickets and enjoy a much-needed cup of coffee. However, to our surprise, we are informed that we are at the wrong pier. But thankfully the lovely staff advise us that this happens regularly and we can still board here. Needless to say, we are very thankful, because there is no way we would make it to the other pier in time.

Consequently, we now have time for breakfast and a coffee at “The Pier Café”. The café is situated on the western side of the scenic Loch Katrine. After ordering bacon and eggs with a caramel latte we take our seats in the warm enclosed veranda. We are treated to spectacular views of the Loch and surrounding mountains of The Trossachs National Park. Soaking in the atmosphere our lattes arrive in what seems a few seconds. Sipping on our smooth roasted caramel lattes we recline in comfort transfixed on the incredible vista that envelops us. Even though the day is overcast, cold and extremely windy it still is an awesome sight. Not long after our meal arrives, thanking the waitress we dig into our bacon and eggs.

The Pier Café Ratings

Carolyn and I both agree that “The Pier Café” is definitely worth a visit if you are in The Trossachs National Park. The views are amazing, the staff are very friendly, the food was delicious and the service very quick. If you arrive by boat we would recommend getting off and have some food and drinks while waiting for the next boat. However, if arriving by car for the boat make sure you give yourselves some extra time to grab a bite. You won’t be disappointed by the food, service or scenery. Carolyn and I would like to thank The Pier Café and the staff for a wonderful experience and rest assured that if we ever return to Stronachlachar we will absolutely come back.
