St Gilgen Austria

Let me introduce you to our beautiful little treasure tucked away in the Salzkammergut in Austria. Austria certainly has some treasures. How can I express the inner peace, this fantastic beautiful area creates in your being. The sounds of the hills alive with music!!! Where are we? About 25kms from Salzburg airport. St Gilgen is situated on the shores of Wolfgangsee. Over the years we have visited this mind-blowing beautiful area several times over. It just keeps calling us back. Wolfgangsee has 3 magnificent villages around its shores. Certainly, you can travel to the 3 villages by road, BUT, the thrill of the ferry on this shimmering lake will transport you into a picturesque new world. Each of these villages has their own unique features. It is hard to choose our favourite one, having stayed at all 3.

Para Gliding Zwolferhorn

Let me first introduce you to St Gilgen. What a quaint Austrian village with its painted murals on the houses and even more on the hotels. We arrived on one trip, on the opening of the summer season. The place was in full holiday season mode. The streets took on a carnival atmosphere with stalls, specialty Austrian dishes were being prepared. Chickens were being rotisseried, their special cakes were cooked, the town was decked out in their magnificent traditional clothes, women and girls in dirndl and men in their leather 3/4 pants with braces and of course their special hats, this is called lederhosen, and then to compliment the event….the band playing oompa pa with their piano accordions and the singers harmony, all added their special touch.

St Gilgen Splendour

The town was already, the locals, the international visitors just bursting for the summer to begin. There is much to be seen and heard here. Museums, mountains, swimmers in the lake and beautiful flowers. Behind the village a gondola awaits you for a trip up Schwarzhorn. What a view!!! A ride well worth taking. It lifts you up to the glorious panoramic views surrounding St Gilgen. A cup of coffee always ready to buy. You mustn’t miss seeing the magnificent church in all its gold splendour and behind the church the prettiest little cemetery you will ever find. So worth a visit.

We encouraged my brother and his wife to travel with us, and they like us, want to return time and time again. We rented an apartment for the four of us which helped with the cost. One of our favourite pastimes is to walk 5 minutes to the lakes edge and there sit under the avenue of trees watching the passing parade, with the background of mountains reflected in the lake, a view you would die for. Just a little further past the trees a cafe perched on the side of the lake which entices you to eat, sit, relax and watch the skiers and boats. On each visit, a must, is a sail on the lake in the ferry on Wolfgangsee, to the other two villages.

I hope I have whetted your appetite to visit our little treasure in a very special spot in the Salzkammergut in beautiful Austria….next time St Wolfgang.
