House Sitting Oxford

Rugged up try and keep the cold from permeating the layers of our clothing. We sit, coffee in hand waiting for the next chapter to unfold. Wind blowing, we cast our eyes towards the tracks hoping our train will arrive soon so as to escape the chill on Worcester station. With Ruby and Willow still at the forefront of our thoughts we step onto the train as the warmth encompasses our bodies. Now the clickity-clack of the wheels reverberating through the train we turn our attention to house sitting Oxford. Ahead lies a short stay with Tara, Phoebe, some ducks and chooks. Located at the end of a gorgeous lane way sits a country cottage oozing with character. Behind the gates hides a lovely English garden albeit still in its winter coat. House sitting Oxford should be a cosy relaxing time spent with some lovely animals.

House Sitting Oxford – Tara, Phoebe and the Domesticated Fowl

Tara is an older, deaf Lab but with an amazingly sweet nature. She loves to be hugged and reciprocates in kind. Though not as agile as she once was, she still has the gumption to run as though a puppy. The large rural backyard is her playground, which she explores with vigour. Come walk time you would think she was a puppy again, she just loves to get out into nature. However, when she is within the confines of the cottage she loves to curl up on her rug and sleep. Phoebe a black and white cat while not as visible as Tara, could be found curled up in her favourite spot above the stairs. Although, less social than Tara she did visit Carolyn’s lap for the occasional smooch and scratch. Come feeding time they both would make their presence known.

House sitting Oxford also came with a new animal to care for ones we hadn’t sat with before. Ducks!!! As we would find out there was little difference between caring for ducks and chickens. Though not personal like Tara and Phoebe, they did have their own quirky nature. At times they would be curious of what I was up to on the outside of their pen. However, once I was inside the pen it was “run for the hills” 😊, as too the chooks. Having never grown up with chocks or ducks (although Carolyn did) a great perk was fresh eggs. What a difference in taste, fresh eggs have over store-bought eggs. Overall our first adventure with ducks was a positive experience.

House Sitting Oxford Homeowners

Besides the array of animals that were in attendance, there were the lovely homeowners Jennie and Chris. They graciously picked us up from the hotel we were staying at. Welcomed us into their home with open arms and made us a very tasty cake 😊. Also, they gave us the grand tour and explained everything we needed to know for our stay. We had a lovely chat getting to know them before they had to leave on their well-earned break.

Overall, we had a wonderful time house sitting Oxford. While making new friends in Jennie and Chris but also spending amazing time with Tara, Phoebe, ducks and chickens.

House Sitting Chiang Mai

House Sitting Chiang Mai

House Sitting Chiang Mai

Twelve months ago, I wouldn’t have believed we would be house sitting in Chiang Mai. Thailand was to be a stopover, catch up with a friend followed by some relaxation time at a resort. However, the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. No matter how carefully a project is planned, something may still go wrong with it”. Gone was the resort replaced by a ten-day house sit in the suburbs of Chiang Mai. Albeit, house sitting Chiang Mai would be a far cry from a hotel resort on the beach it would allow us to experience the Thai culture as a local. This was a major lure of house and pet sitting to be able to soak up the local culture. Throw in a kitten and a dog for good measure we headed to Chiang Mai in 40°C+ temperatures.

house sitting chiang mai tuktuk travel is sweet

Although, we knew very little of Chiang Mai sometimes experiencing firsthand the eccentricities of a place is a great way to learn. Facts we learnt from house sitting Chiang Mai, some of which did surprise us. Chiang Mai sits approximately 700km north of Bangkok. Has an estimated population of 131,091 (2017). It is 310 metres above sea level and has been extremely hot (36°C – 40°C +) during our stay April-May 2019. There are lots of markets, tourists and traffic which is consistent with the rest of Thailand from what we have seen. There are plenty of sightseeing spots to visit within close proximity of Chiang Mai, Mae Sa Waterfall (see blog) for one. Furthermore, if you love to shop for bargains the array of markets will suit you down to the ground. Just remember to haggle with them for the best price.

House Sitting Chiang Mai Nubbins

To begin with we knew that house sitting Chiang Mai was going to have its challenges. Namely Nubbins(Nubs) the Thai dog. We had been informed that he was very timid around new people especially men. This we found was to be an understatement, to say the least. While Nubs warmed to Carolyn in a short period of time, it was not the case for me ☹. I love dogs and usually bond very quickly to them, but Nubs was going to take some time and patience. Resorting to all the tricks I know from getting down on the ground to his level, not looking directly at him. Offering him treats, doing the morning feeds still nothing would work. He would run away as soon as he saw me. After day five I was able to pat him for a short period of time. Halleluiah a breakthrough.

house sitting chiang mai nubbins travel is sweet

Day six brought a remarkable change in Nubs. Having run away as soon as he saw me too coming over for a pat and by the end of the day lying beside me on the lounge. To say I was chuffed would be an understatement. I had finally gained his trust and from that moment on he was like my shadow. He would jump up into bed next to me, sit by my side and the most amazing of all allow me to take him for a walk. We knew he had accepted both of us when he would do his “zoomies” run around the house. In fact, what started out to be a challenging situation turned out to be a wonderful experience.

house sitting chiang mai nubbins relaxing travel is sweet

House Sitting Chiang Mai Claire

In contrast, Claire the kitten bonded to us immediately. Never have I seen a cat that had so many doggy attributes as Claire did. She had a very loving nature, wanting to be with you 24×7. She would sit on Carolyn’s lap but sometimes would have to be moved. Carolyn would say go to Andrew and up she would get and come and sit on my lap. It was very fun to see her do this, not something we have seen in a cat before. However, she still was a kitten and mischievous was her middle name. She was not allowed outside except on a harness, but that didn’t deter her from trying. Stealth pussy cat she was and so darn quick. Needless to say, we were on high alert every time we would open an external door.

house sitting chiang mai claire travel is sweet

Overall, house sitting Chiang Mai had its challenges, it also had great rewards. Having gained the trust of Nubs was the highlight of our stay. Also, having survived the heat was a plus. Heat and I don’t mix well, Carolyn also found the heat challenging. Talia was a wonderful host and showed us all we needed to know for our time in Chiang Mai. So thanks to Talia, Nubbins and Claire for making house sitting Chiang Mai a memorable experience.

House Sitting Gartmore

House Sitting Gartmore

House Sitting Gartmore

Temperature is sitting at 0°C as we turn into the main street, and house sitting Gartmore has begun. As we climb the hill, century old houses dot either side of the road. Reaching the crest, the one and only pub stands majestically upon it’s top.

Surrounded by the community centre and the local store, which we would frequent several times while house sitting Gartmore. Descending from the crest we get the first glimpse of our what is to be our abode for the next three weeks. It is a charming cottage, just what you would expect to find in a rural town nestled in the highlands of Scotland. Upon exiting the car, we are greeted by the crisp frigid air that would accompany us for the next three weeks. However, we have become slightly accustomed to the low temperatures from the proceeding months in England.

Stepping through the front door we are enthusiastically greeted by Jackie and very warmly welcomed into their home. House sitting Gartmore was off to a flying started and would continue for the entirety of our stay. The cottage consisted of two floors, the upper floor contained the three bedrooms and bathrooms. While downstairs hosted the family room, country styled kitchen, dining room and cosy study. The house is filled with loads of country character and charm. Picture in your mind a country styled garden with yellow daffodils, cottage flowers and dramatic mountain backdrop and you have the garden that gently flows from the rear of the cottage. Having been in regular contact with Jackie and Paul we already felt like long-time friends. Introducing us to friends in the local community with a welcoming afternoon tea. We already felt like we are honorary Scots 😊.

House Sitting Gartmore with Baffie

House sitting Gartmore is all about Baffie the black cat. Baffie is very independent but has a very loving nature. So, the times she would be around and seek our attention was lovely. Getting her to chase the toy on the stick was cool or have her running through her toy tunnels was amusing. After playtime she would stay for a scratch but not for long. We would also visit her up on Paul and Jackie’s bed where she would spend most of her day sleeping. She loved to have a scratch there and would get up and have a stretch then lay back down and take more scratches. Night-time Baffie was off exploring the country only to return early morning for some food and to assume her position on the bed. Baffie is a pleasure to care for as we take on the role of adopted mum and dad.

House sitting Baffie has enabled us to experience the truly magnificent country that is Scotland. Not knowing what to expect we have been genuinely surprised and awe inspired.

The Scottish Highlands, Lochs and epic scenery will stick in our memories for years to come. If you have never visited Scotland, I would highly recommend putting it on your bucket list as you won’t be disappointed.Having had the pleasure of meeting two wonderful people in Paul and Jackie who we now consider good friends. House sitting Gartmore has been an awesome experience and one that will be remembered fondly. Thanks Jackie, Paul and Baffie.

Pet Sitting Internationally

Pet Sitting Internationally

Pet Sitting Internationally

Amazingly nine months have passed since we started out on our epic life changing adventure. To say the time has passed quickly would be an understatement. In those nine months we have seen some awe inspiring sights, made incredible new friends and bonded with fantastic animals. Pet sitting internationally was just a dream this time last year. However, one year on, it is our normal way of life and God willing, will be for the foreseeable future. Pet sitting internationally has opened our eyes to how life can be different from what most people consider normal. Now, I know this lifestyle isn’t for everyone and to be honest most people probably think we are crazy. But, having experienced it and seeing how our values of what truly matters have changed we wonder why we didn’t do it earlier. Could you see yourself doing this?

pet sitting internationally wild west travel is sweet

To demonstrate what we have accomplished while pet sitting internationally, I thought I would give you a quick overview. As of 19th of May 2019 we arrive back in Brisbane. Having been gone for 267 days this is a list of interesting numbers

  • 13 House Sits totalling 161 days
  • Stayed at 4 places of Family members or friends totalling 39 days
  • 64 days of paid accommodation
  • 14 plane flights 3 of which were overnight
  • Hired 4 cars totalling 69 days
  • Taken 25 train trips
  • 36 buses
  • 16 shuttle buses
  • 4 ubers/grabs
  • House sat in 3 continents but 5 countries
  • Visited 8 countries
  • Travelled to/through 17 US states
  • Driven well over 12000 kilometres
  • Flown 45500 kilometres

This is just a few of the statistics, it’s pretty amazing looking back. We have yet to calculate the dollars we have spent but we will do that in the coming weeks.

How Can We Afford To Travel On A Tight Budget

Due to the fact that we are pet sitting internationally it will be a lot less than you would expect if you were to holiday for nine months. Having decided pet sitting internationally was our new life we sold everything. Hence the only monthly bill we have is our mobile phone, which is pretty cool. Carolyn works remotely which is our main source of income, and I am building our website, which is bringing in small amounts of money from affiliate marketing. My other focus is on to get our website to rank well on google. As they say content is king, thus content is my main goal currently. Therefore, I would love some travel stories from friends and family that I can post on Travel is Sweet. So, hit me with your interesting stories and submit at “Become a Contributor”.

All our affiliate links can be seen on our main page at Travel is Sweet. It would be wonderful if you need any of those services if you could use our links, as the companies pay us a small commission, but it doesn’t cost you anything, to use our links. The main link that I feel would be useful for most travellers is our affiliation with Booking.com (click this link to go to our affiliate page with them). It is a great site for booking your hotel accommodation. We have been using them for years for great deals and savings. Also, we have an affiliation for those that may like to earn extra money teaching English from home. Click on this link for more information about how to begin. All my photos on our site are for sale. If you wish to purchase any please contact me.

Patience is a Virtue

As you can see it takes a while to start earning money from a blog but we are slowly getting there. Pet sitting internationally, is our new lifestyle and we are loving it. Thus, this gives me the time to work on our blog and bringing to life new projects. Please stay tuned, as they will be coming in the near future.

So as our first year of pet sitting internationally comes to an end, we begin to focus, plan and book our next 12 months.

Life With No Regrets

Life With No Regrets

Life With No Regrets

From time to time, life presents us with opportunities that seem unbelievable or crazy to most people. But, to some, they blossom deep within their being. For me, that rang true four years ago. Thanks to an inauspicious IT job in Northern NSW, that would change my life and eventually, Carolyn’s, forever. How could we sell everything we had worked our entire lives for, on a notion of travelling the world. Especially, having been conditioned by society that the ultimate goal was the “Aussie Dream” of owning your own home. As Aussies, we were brought up to believe that a steady, secure job, that you worked for years in, to pay a mortgage off, was the sensible road to take. Hopefully, someday you will pay that mortgage off. Thus, securing your future with a place to grow old and live happily ever after.

I would say that most of you are nodding in agreement with me now. Important to realise, that was us not so long ago. Ultimately, achieving our goal of a unit by the beach. However, in debt and chained to jobs that were inevitably breaking us. Not blaming the actual jobs we were in but the culture we had as Aussies, built our way of life around. Yes, I understand that we could have taken different roads which may have brought about a different outcome. But, that didn’t negate the fact of where we were or how we felt. As the great writer Mark Twain said “Twenty years from now will you be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did”. Ultimately only you can decide if that is the case in your life, but for us, we believe that would be true.

Life with No Regrets!!!

The rest of Mark Twain’s quote is “So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”. Interestingly, I had heard the first part of the quote several times. But, never the second until we left the shores of Australia. Surprisingly, as I look back now to when I created our website and tag line, how it corresponds closely to what Mark Twain was expressing. “Travel is Sweet. Dream It. Experience It, Treasure It”. Words that we now are experiencing every day of our lives. Importantly, we realise how thoroughly blessed we are and we thank God every day for his guidance in our lives. Now, we have sailed away to catch the trade winds, we begin to fathom the depths of disappointment we would have had twenty years from now, had we not left our safe harbour.

However, leaving our safe harbour has not been without its challenges. Being away from our family, friends, church and Australia are things we definitely miss. Although, with today’s technology that has helped lessen those challenges. Having the ability to jump online and video chat with people halfway around the world is amazing. Missing foods we love such as a meat pie and sauce, fish and chips for our local shop, twisties, cheezels, chicken parmy and Tim Tams just to name a few. Albeit, we will be only gone for nine months this instalment. Our planning has already begun for our next adventure hopefully early 2020. In the meantime, we look forward to our time in Scotland, Spain and Thailand before heading home.

What will you regret?

Eight months ago we took a big step into the unknown, to follow what we believe was right for us. It has only been achieved by taking that first step. Looking back we realize that it wasn’t that big, we just had to be willing to take it. So I put to you this question. What step do you need to take to leave your safe harbour? Whether it be a new career path, to get out of bad situation, to house sit internationally or to accept Gods grace of salvation to name a few. All things that require you to take that first step. We know all too well that the first step is the hardest, but wow what exciting things do those following steps hold for you. We would love to hear from you if you take that first step.

I will leave you with this last quote from John A. Shedd “A ship in harbour is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.”

House Sitting Cassie

House Sitting Cassie

House Sitting Cassie

Border Collies, English Setters, Whippets, Jack Russells are just a few of the dog breeds we have had the privilege to care for. However, of all the dog breeds one sits atop of the bunch as my favourite breed. Having had three of them over the years, I have been looking forward to the day we got to house sit one. Thus, as we head towards Gloucester, I will finally get my wish. House Sitting Cassie has been booked in for several months and as the train pulls into the station the time is fast approaching meeting her. Gathering our suitcases, we head for the exit to meet our Home Owners. We are greeted warmly by Steve and Catherine and exchange pleasantries as we head towards their car. Ahead lies a ten minute journey to see Cassie, and where we will be living for the next 3 weeks.

Pulling away from the station, Steve and Catherine point out some places in Gloucester we can visit during our stay. Also, showing us the closest shopping centre and Chinese restaurant. Driving through the narrow lane ways, we get a sense of the surrounds that will be ours. In reality, we have found roads narrower all over England, especially in rural areas. As the hedges that encroach the lane disappears, we are introduced to the cottage, that will house us during our stay. The cottage sits within fields of farming land, idyllic and peaceful. Modern from the outside and full of the mod cons inside. Pulling in we get ready to meet the girl of the hour. Steve opens the door, I expect to hear the tell-tale signs of Cassie. But nothing is heard. It is not until we open the kitchen door we hear and see her.

Meeting Cassie

House sitting Cassie the German Shepherd begins with the meet and greet. Cassie has been trained that no fuss would be made of her when people arrive. In fact, she has that down pat. However, she is still an adolescent thus gets very excited when she meets us. After the initial hype, she settles down and now just wants all of our attention and pats. Cassie is a beautiful looking shepherd and over the course of our stay we get to see her lovely personality mixed in with her puppy side. As with all puppies, she is very playful and loves to chase her ball, stick or whatever we throw for her. Tug-o-war is another favourite of hers and boy does she get into it, growls, shakes her head and pulls like a mallee bull. Lots of fun and we both have a great time.

As a result of walking her twice a day, I quickly remember that I am getting older as my muscles feel every pull from Cassie’s youthfulness. Once we are out in the fields I let her off the lead and away she goes, without a care in the world. But, she constantly stops and turns around to see I am still following. It’s so nice to see that even though we are new to her she is watching out for me. Once, while playing on our walk in the field, l laid flat on the ground as she wasn’t watching me. On her next turn to check on me, she couldn’t see me, but I could see her. She came racing to see where I was and once she found me licked me to death as I cuddled her. Memories of my German Shepherd “Emma” come rushing back to me.

Taming the Puppy

In fact, by the time we have nearly returned to the house from our walk, has she stopped dragging me along 😊. However, cleaning the mud off her when we get back is a fun little dance. I can understand her point of view as the water was cold, but being clean was our major objective. Once hosed off I would say shake and she would, so cute. Now inside, the puppy has been tamed and she finds a nice warm and cosy spot to fade into La La land. House sitting Cassie reminds me of our three German Sherpherds, Cassie, Emma and Kirra. Although she is still going through the puppy stage she is a very loving, loyal and affectionate dog. I have had an awesome time with her, though my body may not agree as much 😊.

cassie on walk house sitting cassie travel is sweet

My love for German Shepherds is still as strong as ever, but our journey in the house sitting realms has broadened my horizons to other amazing breeds of dogs. Breeds I hadn’t even heard off or had the pleasure to get to know. All with their own amazing personalities and quirks. It truly is a special period in our lives to share with these remarkable animals. House sitting Cassie has been a pleasure and we thank Steve and Catherine for the time we had with her.
