Life With No Regrets

Life With No Regrets

Life With No Regrets

From time to time, life presents us with opportunities that seem unbelievable or crazy to most people. But, to some, they blossom deep within their being. For me, that rang true four years ago. Thanks to an inauspicious IT job in Northern NSW, that would change my life and eventually, Carolyn’s, forever. How could we sell everything we had worked our entire lives for, on a notion of travelling the world. Especially, having been conditioned by society that the ultimate goal was the “Aussie Dream” of owning your own home. As Aussies, we were brought up to believe that a steady, secure job, that you worked for years in, to pay a mortgage off, was the sensible road to take. Hopefully, someday you will pay that mortgage off. Thus, securing your future with a place to grow old and live happily ever after.

I would say that most of you are nodding in agreement with me now. Important to realise, that was us not so long ago. Ultimately, achieving our goal of a unit by the beach. However, in debt and chained to jobs that were inevitably breaking us. Not blaming the actual jobs we were in but the culture we had as Aussies, built our way of life around. Yes, I understand that we could have taken different roads which may have brought about a different outcome. But, that didn’t negate the fact of where we were or how we felt. As the great writer Mark Twain said “Twenty years from now will you be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did”. Ultimately only you can decide if that is the case in your life, but for us, we believe that would be true.

Life with No Regrets!!!

The rest of Mark Twain’s quote is “So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”. Interestingly, I had heard the first part of the quote several times. But, never the second until we left the shores of Australia. Surprisingly, as I look back now to when I created our website and tag line, how it corresponds closely to what Mark Twain was expressing. “Travel is Sweet. Dream It. Experience It, Treasure It”. Words that we now are experiencing every day of our lives. Importantly, we realise how thoroughly blessed we are and we thank God every day for his guidance in our lives. Now, we have sailed away to catch the trade winds, we begin to fathom the depths of disappointment we would have had twenty years from now, had we not left our safe harbour.

However, leaving our safe harbour has not been without its challenges. Being away from our family, friends, church and Australia are things we definitely miss. Although, with today’s technology that has helped lessen those challenges. Having the ability to jump online and video chat with people halfway around the world is amazing. Missing foods we love such as a meat pie and sauce, fish and chips for our local shop, twisties, cheezels, chicken parmy and Tim Tams just to name a few. Albeit, we will be only gone for nine months this instalment. Our planning has already begun for our next adventure hopefully early 2020. In the meantime, we look forward to our time in Scotland, Spain and Thailand before heading home.

What will you regret?

Eight months ago we took a big step into the unknown, to follow what we believe was right for us. It has only been achieved by taking that first step. Looking back we realize that it wasn’t that big, we just had to be willing to take it. So I put to you this question. What step do you need to take to leave your safe harbour? Whether it be a new career path, to get out of bad situation, to house sit internationally or to accept Gods grace of salvation to name a few. All things that require you to take that first step. We know all too well that the first step is the hardest, but wow what exciting things do those following steps hold for you. We would love to hear from you if you take that first step.

I will leave you with this last quote from John A. Shedd “A ship in harbour is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.”

House Sitting Cassie

House Sitting Cassie

House Sitting Cassie

Border Collies, English Setters, Whippets, Jack Russells are just a few of the dog breeds we have had the privilege to care for. However, of all the dog breeds one sits atop of the bunch as my favourite breed. Having had three of them over the years, I have been looking forward to the day we got to house sit one. Thus, as we head towards Gloucester, I will finally get my wish. House Sitting Cassie has been booked in for several months and as the train pulls into the station the time is fast approaching meeting her. Gathering our suitcases, we head for the exit to meet our Home Owners. We are greeted warmly by Steve and Catherine and exchange pleasantries as we head towards their car. Ahead lies a ten minute journey to see Cassie, and where we will be living for the next 3 weeks.

Pulling away from the station, Steve and Catherine point out some places in Gloucester we can visit during our stay. Also, showing us the closest shopping centre and Chinese restaurant. Driving through the narrow lane ways, we get a sense of the surrounds that will be ours. In reality, we have found roads narrower all over England, especially in rural areas. As the hedges that encroach the lane disappears, we are introduced to the cottage, that will house us during our stay. The cottage sits within fields of farming land, idyllic and peaceful. Modern from the outside and full of the mod cons inside. Pulling in we get ready to meet the girl of the hour. Steve opens the door, I expect to hear the tell-tale signs of Cassie. But nothing is heard. It is not until we open the kitchen door we hear and see her.

Meeting Cassie

House sitting Cassie the German Shepherd begins with the meet and greet. Cassie has been trained that no fuss would be made of her when people arrive. In fact, she has that down pat. However, she is still an adolescent thus gets very excited when she meets us. After the initial hype, she settles down and now just wants all of our attention and pats. Cassie is a beautiful looking shepherd and over the course of our stay we get to see her lovely personality mixed in with her puppy side. As with all puppies, she is very playful and loves to chase her ball, stick or whatever we throw for her. Tug-o-war is another favourite of hers and boy does she get into it, growls, shakes her head and pulls like a mallee bull. Lots of fun and we both have a great time.

As a result of walking her twice a day, I quickly remember that I am getting older as my muscles feel every pull from Cassie’s youthfulness. Once we are out in the fields I let her off the lead and away she goes, without a care in the world. But, she constantly stops and turns around to see I am still following. It’s so nice to see that even though we are new to her she is watching out for me. Once, while playing on our walk in the field, l laid flat on the ground as she wasn’t watching me. On her next turn to check on me, she couldn’t see me, but I could see her. She came racing to see where I was and once she found me licked me to death as I cuddled her. Memories of my German Shepherd “Emma” come rushing back to me.

Taming the Puppy

In fact, by the time we have nearly returned to the house from our walk, has she stopped dragging me along 😊. However, cleaning the mud off her when we get back is a fun little dance. I can understand her point of view as the water was cold, but being clean was our major objective. Once hosed off I would say shake and she would, so cute. Now inside, the puppy has been tamed and she finds a nice warm and cosy spot to fade into La La land. House sitting Cassie reminds me of our three German Sherpherds, Cassie, Emma and Kirra. Although she is still going through the puppy stage she is a very loving, loyal and affectionate dog. I have had an awesome time with her, though my body may not agree as much 😊.

My love for German Shepherds is still as strong as ever, but our journey in the house sitting realms has broadened my horizons to other amazing breeds of dogs. Breeds I hadn’t even heard off or had the pleasure to get to know. All with their own amazing personalities and quirks. It truly is a special period in our lives to share with these remarkable animals. House sitting Cassie has been a pleasure and we thank Steve and Catherine for the time we had with her.

House Sitting Judi

Relaxing into our seats we soak in the beauty that is Switzerland as our train speeds towards Aarau. Ahead lies five days house sitting Judi the Maine Coon cat. In the meantime, the clickety-clack of the train wheels gliding over the rails soothes my being. While my thoughts of Nati and Murphy who will be sorely missed, now turn to our new house sit with Judi. I’m truly amazed at how our lives have changed so rapidly in six months. Such is our change, we have gone from sun and surf to snow and mountains half a world away. House sitting Judi, kicks off our first full house sit of 2019 and will round off our stay in Switzerland. Although Switzerland has been tough on our wallets, it has been lovely to see locations that my parents have raved about for years.

Navigating Aarau

By the time the train pulls into Aarau, our thoughts are now firmly fixed on house sitting Judi. But our bodies are craving food. Burger King is close at hand, and probably the most inexpensive. But guess what, in this part of Switzerland they speak Swiss/German. So, Carolyn does her speaking via hand signalling and lots of smiling. Then finishes with thank you, danke and merci, to cover all bases. Ordering completed we now sit down and eat.

Having now exited the station, we navigate our way through Aarau. However, instead of taking the bus as intended, we decide it is only a 25-minute walk, so let’s do that. However, having taken the wrong route we are now faced with stairs. Not just a few, but three flights of steep uneven century old steps. Normally, this would prove no issue but with two large heavy suitcases they become my archenemy. Heart pounding, breathing furiously, muscles burning I accomplish the descent of the suitcases. By the time we reach our final destination my breathing has returned to normality and the lactic acid burn has subsided. Then to my disbelief more stairs. YES, you heard me “more stairs”. Completing my latest obstacle, we settle into our new digs for the next five days house sitting Judi.

Meeting Judi

By the time we opened the door to our house sit, the homeowner had already left for her trip. Hence, we find one big fluffy pussy cat sitting near the door wondering who we are. To begin with, she looked us both up and down, comes over to sniff us, then lets us give her a quick pat before she disappears. Casting an eye over our dwelling that will be our home for the next five days, I am reminded we lived in an apartment only a few months ago. Judi is dark grey in colour, very fluffy and a little apprehensive of us for the first few days. However, she does eventually accept us allowing us to pat her for extended periods of time. Judi is a beautiful looking cat and has a lovely personality. Thus, if we had more time with her, I’m sure she would have bonded closer to us. House sitting Judi, while being short was a fun little end to our time in Switzerland.

House Sitting Heidi

House Sitting Heidi

House Sitting Heidi

As a child I remember hearing about a book called Heidi. Never reading it myself, just knowing it was about a girl living in the Swiss Alps. With this in mind, I thought I would do some research about this story. As a result, I found that it was about Heidi a young orphaned girl being raised by her recluse grandfather in The Swiss Alps. Obviously, there was more to this story. However, our comparison is about being a family parental figure to some wonderfully sweet Swiss animals. Albeit, they are actually American animals living in Switzerland while daddy is working here for three years. Hence, House Sitting Heidi” I believe is a wonderful way to describe our stay.

Having organised this “House Sitting Heidi” adventure three months in advance we have been looking forward to its arrival. Hoping for a white Christmas, but unfortunately not getting one. However, we did get a small snow fall while we were here. Situated close to Geneva and 5 minutes from the French border it was centrally located for us. The views over the Jura mountains and Lake Geneva are beautiful. In fact, even lovelier when the snow had fallen and blanketed the mountains. Chavannes-de-Bogis will be our base for the next month with the company of Murphy and Nati.

House Sitting Heidi Dog

Firstly, we have Murphy a five year old English Setter what a character he is. He loves his food and when any session of eating is upon us, we can be sure Murphy is close at hand. Sitting right beside us at the dining table, pawing us every few minutes to remind us he is still there waiting. Furthermore, after his night time meal he gets a greenie (a treat) and oh what a little dance he puts on for it 😊 see video below. Coupled with that he is an excellent singer, joining us singing Christmas carols- see video below. Additionally, come walk time he knows as soon as we begin to put our shoes on and goes into another dance routine 😊. Speaking of walks or should that be runs. Once he is unshackled from his lead, he is off. Boy can he run and run 😊.

murphy house sitting heidi travel is sweet

At this time of year, after each walk Murphy needs to have the dirt and mud removed. He knows this and voluntarily, but slowly gets into the shower where we clean him up. Never have I seen a dog walk into a shower and wait like he does, very well behaved and brings a smile to my dial, every time. Also, he loves playing tug-o-war and he gets this growl going as he flicks his head to win the game. Murphy likes to put himself to bed at night, disappears when he is ready, and we often found him in our bed, head on the pillow and all. He loves to be around us, doesn’t need a lot of pats, just to be in our company, Murphy has been a pleasure to look after and will be missed.

House Sitting Heidi Cat

Now, we have Miss Nati an 18 year old cat. Nati had suffered a life threatening infection a couple of months prior to our house sit but was on the mend. However, her recovery included having an injection of fluids every five days. Consequently, that fell on me to do and to say I was a bit daunted was an understatement. Surprisingly, it turned out to be way less daunting as Nati was such a great patient. She knew it needed to be done and coped incredibly well, which made my job easier. When we first arrived, she slept on her cushion in the corner of the lounge, and we worried she would not make the 3 weeks we were there. However, after a day she became like a new cat, and maybe she did that just for us, as her days were numbered.

nati house sitting heidi travel is sweet

Although unsteady on her feet due to arthritis, she had gumption and was very spritely. She would jump from lounge to chair and up onto the bench seat albeit a bit awkward. It was pure delight to watch her antics. Furthermore, Nati loved her food too and like Murphy would sit right beside us and meow while we ate. Boy could she meow, but such was her affection you could only love her for it. She spent nearly every waking hour on Carolyn’s lap. Whether working on her computer or sitting watching the TV. Such a loving, sweet and adorable cat was Miss Nati. Ultimately, Nati was a such a joy to look and spend time with. Again, we have met amazing pets, which comes down to the love and care of the owners.

Heart Break

It was with great sadness, only a mere month after our sit we were informed that lovely Miss Nati had passed away in the company of her loving family. Such, was her zest for life and her unconditional love she gave she will be unbelievably missed. Though we only had the pleasure of her company for just under a month, she is indelibly etched in our memories for ever.

In conclusion, our time House Sitting Heidi was amazing and marvellous. It will be counted as one of our favourite house sits.

House Sitting Geordies

House Sitting Geordies

House Sitting Geordies

House sitting Geordies promises to be an adventure. Although three big dogs may be challenging, we look forward to bonding with them. Two Weimaraner, one Gordon Setter are breeds we haven’t sat before. Thus, familiarising ourselves with their little quirks and personalities will no doubt be entertaining. In fact, having a family connection to Newcastle makes house sitting Geordies a touch nostalgic. In front of us lies the driveway to this house sit and within its walls five days of the unknown. Entering we are greeted boisterously by Hamish, Reeva and Grace. Our companions, whom we will grow to love over the coming days. Straightaway, we learn that we will be changed physically and mentally by these three canines. In such a positive way as they are such loving dogs, even though they are humungous.

House Sitting Geordies

Firstly, we have the lovebug of the group and the biggest. Hamish is a Gordon Setter with so much love to give, you would think he is human. Hence, when he is after a smooch you need to be ready for his full weight. In fact, given the chance he will end up on your lap like a cat. However, this ends up with us covered in Hamish 😊. For those that remember a movie called “Any which Way You Can” with Clint Eastwood you would remember Clyde his orangutan. Clyde is loving, affectionate and such a character. In essence, Hamish is tarred from the same brush. Hence, sometimes we affectionately called Hamish, Clyde.

hamish house sitting geordies travel is sweet

hamish clyde house sitting geordies travel is sweet

Secondly, we have the crazy one who was a little stand offish to start. Reeva, the first of the Weimaraner’s is full of energy and cheeky to boot. Not to mention she loves to play tug-o-war with her ball. She is one of the strongest dogs I have ever played ball with. I couldn’t get it out of her mouth when she had it, I only got it, when she let me, so I could throw it for her. Although shy at the start she opened up and had a very loving nature. In fact, she also loved the attention and would compete with Hamish to get it.

Her Name Says It All

Grace the matriarch of the group has the sweetest of natures. She sits on the lounge like the Queen and watches over her subjects. In general, she will give first dibs to both Hamish and Reeva for our affection, and she will wait until they finish and then come for her turn. Her lady like mannerisms and gentleness will win over the hardest of hearts. Not to mention her love for the warm spot in front of the fire. Overall, Grace by name Grace by nature.

grace house sitting geordies travel is sweet

However, come meal time, house sitting Geordies pets, morphs into an entirely different situation. It resembles the throng of people clambering through the doors of the Boxing Day Sales back home in Australia. No place for the weak or frail of nature, it is dog verse dog verse human 😊. Ok, maybe I’m stretching the truth a little but they do love their food. See the video below of a standard meal time circus. Nevertheless, these three beautiful natured dogs have lots of love to give. Granted, house sitting Geordies, was an eventful five days, filled with fun laughter and lots of cuddles. Ultimately, Hamish (Clyde), Reeva and Grace won us over with their love and affection. Forever, etched in our memories is our time house sitting Geordies.

Three Cats in Chicago

Three Cats in Chicago

Three Cats in Chicago

With a mere 10 days left on our visa and countless miles travelled, three cats, await us in Chicago for our final house sit in the USA. Touching down at Chicago Midway Airport, we now have to decide, how to get to our sit. Will it be via a train, taxi, uber, Lyft or shuttle. After asking questions at several desks, we decide a shuttle will be our best option. However, we will first have to go via downtown Chicago to drop off other passages first. Free tour of Chicago included, yay 😊. The ride into Chicago was awesome, we had great conversation with the other passengers. We were given some useful tips and enjoyed some laughs as well. Americans are such accommodating people, I guess that’s why we love coming here. After an hour ride, we reach our final destination.

We are greeted by a chilly -3 ̊ C, that cuts right through us. Furthermore, we aren’t dress for the conditions, thus the frigid temperature hit us quickly. Our Home Owner had left the key in a padlock which used a dial key lock. Unfortunately, due to the temperature it had frozen and we are unable to turn the dial. Unable to contact the Home Owner, we resort to opening our bags on the sidewalk and change clothes to suit the freezing conditions. At one stage I took off my shirt to put on my thermals, which really showed how cold it was. Finally, after what seemed an eternity, we communicated with the home owner. She advised us to store our bags around on the back patio and head to the local Starbucks. Hot coffee and warm surrounds, who were we to argue 😊.

Meeting the Three Amigos

Anti-climactic to say the least, as our three cats were very shy to begin with. But Ollie didn’t take long to come out of his shell. He was the outgoing of the three cats.

three cats ollie pondering travel is sweet

However, Sasha did come out of his shell as well.

three cats sasha travel is sweet

Charlie was the timid one of them all, by the end he was allowing as to pat him for a brief period of time.

three cats charlie trying to sleep travel is sweet

They all loved to play for periods in the day, chasing the laser dot or the stick with the toy mouse on it. The rest of the day was spent curled up in a warm place sleeping. Identifying each cat took a bit, as they were all the same colouring, with minor distinctions.

Ollie had a white stripe on his nose and he didn’t mind a scratch. Ollie suffers from asthma, so I had to administer his medicine via an inhaler two times a day, that was a first for me.

Sasha was the big boy out of them all, we did get to cuddle with him a couple of times.

Charlie, the quietest and could be distinguished by the black tears that would gather in his eyes. While they were a little stand offish, they were lovely cats to look after.

Chicago

As this was our third visit to Chicago, we didn’t do any sightseeing. However, Chicago has some amazing place to see and things to do. Check out Trip Advisor for a good overview of attractions. If you would like to know more about our house and pet sitting way of life click here.
